Choosing a dog shampoo

Let us explore what to look for when choosing a shampoo and conditioner to wash your dog:

Dogs have very sensitive skin that is half the thickness of human skin and has a very different pH balance. So to ensure you don’t irritate the skin, avoid using human products or soaps on your dog and instead use products that have been specifically designed with your dog’s coat and skin in mind like the range of PET PATROL Doggie Shampoo's that are now available from Take a Lot and your favourite Pet Shop.

What not to use:

There are many home-made remedies for various skin maladies and parasites. And while some may be perfectly safe, often they are based on human skin needs. Generally, if something is safe for humans, that does not necessarily mean it is safe for our pets. Humans don’t tend to lick themselves when grooming, while dogs do, so we must be aware that some things can be toxic when ingested.

Tea tree is antibacterial and antiseptic, but if the tea tree in a product is in sufficient concentration to have all the purported benefits, it will be toxic if consumed. The PET PATROL Tea Tree Doggie Shampoo is a perfect example of a very safe formulation. This will not harm your doggie when he licks himself after a bath.

Itchy skin:

If your dog has itchy skin, consider a shampoo like PET PATROL Aloe Vera Nourishing Doggie Shampoo. This shampoo with aloe vera is particularly soothing and the Byotrol active ingredient will help with those nasty odour causing bacteria and will leave your fury friend smelling fresh and clean!

Greasy skin

If your dog is quite smelly or greasy a shampoos such as PET PATROL All Purpose Doggie Shampoo or PET PATROL 2 in 1 Conditioning Shampoo may help. These shampoo's are also antibacterial and antifungal. These are also two other sources of smelly skin. The Byotrol active ingredient helps with this.

Flaky skin

Dogs that have dry, flaky skin will do well with PET PATROL Aloe Vera Nourishing Doggie Shampoo or a very gentle shampoo like PET PATROL Puppy Love Shampoo together with a good brush to redistribute the natural oils through the coat. Shampooing can actually dry the skin, so backing off with the baths a bit might also help for dogs with dry skin. If this is the chosen route, use the PET PATROL Dog Deodoriser or the PET PATROL Dog Grooming Wipes to keep them smelling fresh and odour free.

Normal skin

If your dog has fairly normal skin, with no flakes, grease or excessive smell, using any of the PET PATROL shampoo's in the range is fine. Alway aim for a good quality shampoo like PET PATROL.

Do I need a conditioner?

If you have a nice gentle shampoo, a conditioner is not really necessary. Conditioners can help with a dry coat so we have developed the PET PATROL 2 in 1 Conditioning Shampoo with this in mind.
Happy bathing!!!
